Darwin is a small town located on the top coast of the Northern Territory, Australia.
It had limited civil and military defences against attack from other forces. Both the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) had bases located here. 15000 allied military personnel called this place home. After the outbreak of war in the Pacific, Darwin's forces were strengthened in readiness for an invasion by the Japanese. Many people believed that Japan wanted to take over Australia. Darwin's had a population of just over 5800 people. But 2 months before the attack only 2000 civilians had been evacuated from the area.
