"The fall of Singapore to the Japanese on the 15th of February 1942 opens the battle for Australia"

John Curtin, Prime Minister

On the morning of the attack, there were no radars to provide early warning of the air raids that were coming. They suspected nothing and were caught off guard when the Japanese attacked. 45 allied ships at the time were anchored in the harbour. The main Japanese force raid was commanded by Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo. You may be wondering why we were attacked in the first place. It was to prevent the allied powers using Darwin as their main base for ships and planes to contest the invasions of Timor and Java.
