On the 19th of February 1942, in the middle of World War II, Australia witnessed its first and largest attack in history. 242 Japanese aircraft commanded by Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, attacked Darwin's harbour, sinking ships and destroying airfields. The town was lightly defended and was easily open for attack. There were heavy ally losses, as well as a large number of civilian casualties. This bombing is often referred to as the 'Pearl Harbour of Australia' even though a higher amount of bombs were dropped on Darwin.
